Monday 2nd December 2024 . Today, the final result Monday 2nd December 2024
.
Today, the final results for the Irish Election were declared. Following the ballot which took place on Friday, Fianna Fáil gained the most seats. Here, the count is rather more involved than the UK first past the post, which I covered back in July. In this system, electors are able to vote for candidates in order of preference. This in turn creates a count in several stages which involves quotas, spare votes, elimination and transfer votes. To see this explained, check out @gavreilly who smartly explains the process using, well, er Smarties.

However, it is not the results which interested me today (I missed being in Ireland to cover this election by two days). As I travelled down the N71 back to West Cork, a road I have travelled many times during elections, I was observing the corex-board election posters of every political persuasion adorning all available posts and poles. Or at least, they always used to.

It was the coverage of the election campaign by @dan_kitwood which raised a point about the ‘insane amount of plastic waste on all those placards’. I wanted to see if there really were as many posters in Cork South-West as there used to be. I had also been led to understand from local sources that posters had been banned within a 50km radius of Skibbereen this campaign.

There was certainly no complete absence on the road, although there was a notable rule observance in Clonakilty. Either that or the town had been super efficient in taking down the posters. There was evidence however of timely partisan removal which (forgive me) I shakily snapped into the sunshine on the phone as I was whisked past at a brisk 80kph (himself is not keen on slowing up for me for shots, once he has the old van wound up!)

Thankfully there were indeed fewer placards this year, although their accompanying cable ties are still of considerable concern.

Three seats were filled for Cork South-West: Michael Collins, Christopher O’Sullivan and Leader of the Social Democrats, Holly Cairns, who by coincidence, announced the birth of her daughter on election day.

Thursday 21st November 2024 . In my last post I ma Thursday 21st November 2024
.
In my last post I made a pledge - submit to WPOTY and TWPP for 2025.
Hmmm, I’ve already hit a problem. The submission date for the next wildlife photographer is just two weeks away. OK that isn’t so much an issue as
1. It will give me a year to get my a*se into gear
2. I will still be submitting in 2025, with any (hopeful) outcome only becoming visible the following year.
Let’s make this a long term plan!

Posted here are a couple of archive shots, both taken in Ireland over ten years ago when I was still able to pursue what was actually my first love, wildlife photography. The puffins of Skellig Michael and humpback whales on my home patch in Toehead Bay. Since then, work photography in the form of day to day photojournalism has taken over. Which, by the time I have turned around the photos, I never seem to find the time or energy to go in search of our amazing wildlife. This story familiar to any of you?!

With thirteen categories for individual photos, including animal portraits and animals in their environment, there is plenty of scope for photos such as these but they truly need to be a bit different or special. I mentioned the photojournalism category in my last post, which would perfectly combine my abilities…and I do have a subject already in mind. It gives me a whole year to get the story.

Plans can be made but they can also be disrupted. The second half of this year, a case in point, has not panned out how I expected, with plans often changing almost at the last minute. I already know that the beginning of next year is also going take some sorting, what with himself being scheduled for a surgical procedure which will entail me becoming a temporary carer and chauffeur (the latter much to his terror - he has never been a comfortable passenger. Wish me luck!). However, this might offer the opportunity to focus on my own projects for a change, rather than what suits journalism day to day.

The research starts now, and I am going to push myself out of my comfort zone. Anyone else thinking of doing the same?

Monday 18th November 2024 . A leap for joy! Well t Monday 18th November 2024
.
A leap for joy! Well that shot by @jm_grandio is enough to make anyone smile, as did a number of other photographs selected for the annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Natural History Museum. Today, I made my annual trip to enjoy a couple of hours absorbing the details of spectacular shots - all part of fuelling creative inspiration. Sadly there were also a number of outstanding photographs in the photojournalism category which drew my attention to the plight of nature and our wonderful animals, it breaks my heart to see. I have included a few of the entries which caught my eye, including some joyful ones too.

A half hour walk to the other side of Hyde Park got me back to the Leica Gallery, where Tom Stoddart: Legacy was showing. As a photojournalist, he covered the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 as well as many of the European conflicts of the early 90s. It is hard to believe that the events he documented are all in such recent memory.

Move on to gallery no3 - a twenty minute walk along Oxford Street and China Town, to the National Portrait Gallery for the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize. The selection is always different, surprising, sometimes shocking but also inspiring. I have included a couple of entries which caught my eye in more ways than one. Each year I promise to have another go at submitting, having tried unsuccessfully a few times some years ago. I have had projects I have wanted to do but just haven’t got going - I really must.

It is so important to keep absorbing work from diverse sectors to keep the creativity moving. I certainly kept moving in the process of getting around London - to the count of 14,000 steps!
Three very different genres - nature/wildlife, photojournalism, portraiture, all in one day.

I shall publicly set myself the challenge here, to submit entries to both WPOTY and TWPP for next year to push myself out of my laziness and comfort zone. (Make sure you hold me to it!)
Well done to all of this years winners. (I have tagged the photos where they have an Instagram account)

The annual Remembrance Parade took place in Saffron Walden.
As our MP is now going to be notable by her absence due to requirements on a greater level, I feel inclined to add some different observations on those who were present.

The alternative media photos will be found on my other account.

Saturday 2nd November 2024 . Saffron Walden Round Saturday 2nd November 2024

Saffron Walden Round Table annual Fireworks display, with the additional laser show. This event seems to come around more quickly every year.

Once again, the weather wasn’t on the side of the volunteers setting up The Common, the low cloud drizzle saturating everything, however, it was alright on the night.

Huge thanks to all the guys of the Round Table, all the volunteers manning the gates and the sales. The events team, DJs and MCs. Not forgetting the pyrotechnics and laser teams.

Another great event for the town.

Monday 28th October 2024 . A Bank Holiday here in Monday 28th October 2024
.
A Bank Holiday here in Ireland, as the nearest day to Samhain, which falls on 1st November. As one of the four important quarter days, Samhain marks the beginning of the Celtic winter, yet has become associated with Hallowe’en.

The tradition of the jack o’ lanterns originated in Ireland, then crossing the Atlantic with the emigres. Originally carved from turnips (swede), the readily available and easily carved pumpkin became more popular.

The name jack o’ lantern originates from the story of Stingy Jack, who twice tricked the devil, and made him promise not to bother him for ten years, and not to claim his soul when he died. However, when that day came, he was denied a place in heaven and the devil couldn’t let him into hell either because of the bargain. Now destined to perpetual wandering, the devil took pity on him and gave him a single glowing coal and sent him out into the darkness. Too hot to handle, Jack carved a turnip lantern to carry the coal.

To keep the grandchildren occupied during their visit to Ireland, they each to drew their mask face onto paper to make a stencil. They all enjoyed scooping out the middle of the pumpkins (destined for compost), whilst I had the more difficult task of hollowing out the turnip (the flesh enjoyed for Sunday dinner!) The turnip lantern, seen in the first photo, is based on the lantern which can be seen in the National Museum of Ireland in County Mayo.

Straightforward, truthful and honest, you won’t find fancy-coloured filters, trickery or retouching in my professional work. If I do ever choose to, or find the need to, I will declare it so. I photograph as is, and present the images as was.
